![]() ![]() The steps described above may vary in duration. In digital printing, the data is transmitted directly to the printing machine. Productions printed in offset technology are now ready to be transferred to printing plates using CTP imaging technology. This means they are converted to a raster image (bitmap) using raster image processor software. Ready to printīefore we are ready to print, all printed sheets have to be ripped. Its main purpose is to make sure that the pages are in the correct order and to make best use of a printed sheet while minimizing paper waste. Most books require setting pages and fitting them to the printed sheet in a stage called imposition. You can also consider ordering a hardcopy proof – a physical sample copy of your book, especially useful with expensive productions like photo albums or coffee table books where colour reproduction is key. Nowadays, the most popular are soft proofs, where a technically checked production file is displayed onscreen for your evaluation. There are several types of proof you can accept. What happens at this stage depends on the printing company since creating proofs is their responsibility. Proofing is a very important stage that requires close cooperation between a printing house and publisher, book designer or professional publishing services supplier. It improves the final acceptance process and guarantees that your job doesn't fall out of the queue because of the additional corrections needed. Every professional prepress company checks their files thoroughly before sending them to print. When preparing the final PDF, it is crucial to follow the printing house requirements that describes the way a document should be prepared in order to be printed. After the files are approved by the editor, they need to be validated in a process called preflight. Working on the final appearance of the book includes a few rounds of corrections, for both language and typesetting. Preflight and sending files to the printing house Graphics can be adapted to the CMYK colour model, and contrast and brightness are adjusted. A typesetter chooses the spacing between words and letters, chapter styles, how large section breaks are, and what size the subheadings are and combines these choices with graphic elements such as illustrations, pictures, ornaments, lines, frames, and background colour.Īt this stage, all necessary image adjustments are done. When the layout is approved by the editor or author, typesetting can begin.īook typesetting is the art of arranging text on book pages to provide greater readability. Cohesion and consistency is always a designer's ultimate goal. While creating a layout, the designer has to make a lot of decisions regarding various graphic elements the font type and size, leading, page margins, and more. Academic and non-fiction books differ in structure from fictional books and therefore require a different approach. ![]() It can also save a lot of time on any future corrections!ĭesigning a book always begins with becoming acquainted with book's genre. Book formatting is very important – if your document has a clear structure, it is easier for designers or typesetters to understand your intention. At this stage, what you as a publishing house or an author usually want is to have your text be neat and well-structured. Our prepress adventure begins with a completed manuscript received in a word processor program such as Microsoft Word. Modern prepress professionals usually divide their duties into the following stages: Layout design and typesetting Many publishing houses or self-publishers decide to outsource or order publishing services related to typesetting, cover and graphic design and other prepress activities to a professional publishing services supplier or a freelance designer. It includes book design, typesetting services, preflight, proofing, imposition and transfer to the final output device. The extended definition of this term describes every process that happens before printing and finishing the book. “Prepress” is used in the printing industry to refer to all printers’ activities after they receive an order to print a book (or any other artwork such as a brochure, business card, or magazine) but before the actual job begins. So, before we go any further, let me start this article by explaining where this name derives from and what it refers to. In spite of the whole industry being aware of the term “ Prepress”, we can still see some discrepancies in understanding the meaning of this phrase.

There’s a chapter in Orhan Pamuk’s My Name Is Red narrated by a dog. A director I worked with at the beginning of my career in audiobooks still remembers a Jamaican prostitute in a Napoleonic naval novel whom she felt I captured to a T. I admit to making my evil characters speak like Basil Rathbone when I can. ![]() I am fortunate in having a facility for accents so I tend to mix those in when no specific regional voice is dictated by the author. Sometimes there are historical characters whose voices we know and I have to make at least a nod in the direction of reality. A given character’s voice will be described as high or deep or fluting. Often the voice is dictated by the author. I find some quirk or some pitch for one of the characters in a scene if there isn’t a great deal of age difference or regional accent difference. It’s often a case of making sure there is a contrast within a scene. Understanding that you are an accomplished actor, what is your process for creating the voice for characters? Do you have a cast of characters/voices? How do you match voices to characters? What are some of the favorite characters that you’ve read? Keep the growling characters to a minimum. Quit for the day when I feel my voice wearing out. What are some things you do to protect your voice? My voice doesn’t hold up much beyond that. How many hours a day do you read when you’re on a book?įive or six hours a day. I have a home studio but some publishers like to have their own engineer and a director. Do you work from home, or do you go to a studio? Sometimes historical books need some elucidation. My communication with authors is usually for Fantasy and Sci-Fi titles where the names of places and people are invented. I have to make sure I know the pronunciations of odd or foreign words. ![]() How old are the characters? Obviously gender matters a lot. I need to know if there are specific accents. ![]() I read at first for tone - is it dramatic, is it comic, is it both of those? Tone dictates pace. How do you begin to prepare for an audiobook reading? Do you ever talk to authors? I got a book from him, and slowly built from there. The peak charge voltage should be the same but just take a bit longer. So does the new "c" type battery fit in the older less powerful chargers then? I'm all for a slower charger that does not get the battery so warm. The battery gets quite warm and I usually pull the plug early, finding it charged to a pretty high level long before you'd think. This is why manufacturers comes out with new improved types. The Li-ion chemistries (there are at least 5 main ones) are still being improved towards higher safe voltages/charges. I trust Nikon in this, but still like to charge batteries outside the camera. So the charger cuts out at a conservative safe voltage/charge. Oh and the Boeing dreamliner had a similar story. Too much voltage/charge poses a fire hazard, there was a Samsung mobile where they had become abit to greedy. For the same battery, higher voltage means more charge. Yes, and as you said the End of Charge voltage of Li-ion is variable. Just keep an eye on the battery indicator and the one but last item of the set up menu (the wrench): "battery info" for awhile. If you like experimenting, charge it first with your existing charger, pop it in the camera, connect the USB and see if it adds an appreciable amount before the orange charging light on the camera extinguishes. I see as the only risk, that you miss out on a few extra mAh's of charge. Note that none of this has anything to do with the capacity in mAh. My thought is that the newest charger might charge at a slightly faster rate to keep charging times down to normal.įor Li-Ion batteries the nominal voltage is 3.6 V/cell, max charge voltage is 4.1, best storage voltage is 3.7, and the minimum discharge voltage is 2.9 - 3.2V. The peak charging voltage is determined by the battery chemistry which is Li-Ion in this case I think, and not the capacity of the battery in mAh. Your older batteries are are rated for a bit less mAh charge, and perhaps a bit lower voltage once charged then the new one. If you are like me, you will be bored soon with peeling off the side of the camera for every charge. I have the ec-24 cable that came with the camera, so I am giving that a try. Takes a long time though (= overnight with my laptop). I used a random USB-C cable from my computer traveling light, did not know of a special cable. If I had to buy the 25a, having a 25, I would just try it, assuming I just loose a few mAh's and perhaps gaining some service life. My 2.5 yr old Z7 (first batch) already came with a 25a, so assume all Z's, except Z50 got that one. The c is the only one that needs the 25a, the difference might be a slightly higher End of Charge voltage, to be sure of the stated mAh of charge. Secondly, I want to know if I am limited to this discontinued cable or can I use pretty much any standard cable with the appropriate USB connectors and link to a power bank, my vehicle's usb socket or a generic usb wall plug?Įdit: Nikon included a nice "manual" with the battery in several languages, but that only contains warnings and disclaimers. Firstly, it seems discontinued: I cannot find a store here in South Africa that has stock, and I notice B&H marked it discontinued, pretty much same with Amazon. (b) If I want to charge the battery in camera (I am aware with my camera it must be turned off), both Nikon and online dealers only mention the EH 7P power adapter. So I want to make sure, is the older charger safe for the new battery? The shop where I bought the battery, and seemingly most other dealers also mention the MH25, that I still have from my D800. (a) Nikon's site says I must charge it with the MH25a. Now I am a bit confused when I read about the charger and camera charging cable: I used my old D800 batteries with my Z7 up till now, as I bought it second hand without its original battery.Īt the spur of the moment I ordered an en-el15c in October and it suddenly arrived at my door today. ![]() With a 5.5 to 6.5 Mohs Hardness rating, opals are susceptible to scratching and are more suitable for wearing on special occasions rather than every day.

Buy what you can afford and factor in the cost of tailoring.Wiki Policies Health Questions Visiting Events Buy & Sell Filter By Flair Not everyone will be able to afford to purchase suits from queer creators and that’s okay. They have worked long and hard to perfect their skill. But when you think about creating clothes for women, our bodies are so drastically different with all our curves, etc., it really does require time, effort and skill to create a high quality product.įinally, queer producers should be paid well for their craft. Most small clothiers do not have that kind of scale or power. Keeping with the Walmart example, companies like that have a HUGE supply chain and can make demands on their production line to bring costs down. Think about it: We expect clothes to be cheap because companies like Walmart have made most goods accessible to the average American, but it comes at a cost that most of us are not aware of: gross labor violations, slave-level wages abroad and shipping jobs overseas, environmental degradation in other countries and saddles workers with health challenges. Michelle, I understand your concerns, but the fact is most queer brands cannot afford to sell cheaper suits because of the costs involved in creating custom products. It is easier for a tailor to remove and take-in fabric than it is to add fabric or “let-out.”Īlternatively, there are brands that offer new suits off the rack at affordable prices (between $100-$300). If you’ve come to terms with tailoring, just remember this: When purchasing an article of clothing that you intend to get tailored, be sure that it fits the largest portions of your body and get any excess material taken in. BUT, my wealthy neighbors are always dropping off their Chanel shirts and Hilfiger suits at these local thrift stores, at which you can purchase affordable, beautiful items and then use the rest of your shopping budget to have your thrifted apparel tailored. That’s not a humble brag – my apartment is rent stabilized. I live in a part of NYC known for being a hub of thrift stores in a wealthy neighborhood. I have always been an advocate of thrifting for suits. The problem is that suits can be very, VERY expensive, especially if you want one that is properly tailored and doesn’t look…well…cheap. Whether you wear them every day or only tolerate wearing them for special occasions (weddings, job interviews, awards ceremonies, graduations, cocktail parties), a good suit is a staple of any wardrobe. ![]() While Luminar Neo has no free plans, there’s a 30-day money-back guarantee.
